Does Marijuana cause man boobs? THC and Gynecomastia

Recently, doctors have noticed a large surge in men seeking man boob reduction treatments and Gynecomastia surgery. Gynecomastia is an increasing problem and is thought to be caused by many factors including Marijuana intake in men.

Gyno, often also known as man boobs or sometimes ‘moobs', is a condition that causes the structure inside the upper body chest region to build up just like a woman's breasts. It affects around 40% of men between 25 and 45 with an even higher percentage of men over 45 being affected.

With it being so common you would think that professionals would know what causes it. Instead, it has proven difficult to pinpoint an exact trigger.

Some medical professionals think that it is caused by hormonal fluctuation within the male body – with affected men having much more of the female hormone estrogen than testosterone.

Some men accept their problem, others find it harder to put up with taunts and embarrassment when they take their shirt off when changing for the gym or swimming, for example.

One man suffering from Gynecomastia they thought was caused by smoking weed said anonymously:

“Whenever I took my T-shirt off I had a proper set of breasts. These were enormous, they were visible from every single viewpoint. I could have passed for a girl.

Does Smoking Weed Cause Gynecomastia?

marijuana leafScientific studies have shown that ingesting marijuana because it contains phytoestrogens, can increase levels of estrogen in the body.

At the same time, THC has been shown to lower testosterone levels in men.

More estrogen and less testosterone can lead to the development of male breast tissue¹.

Therefore regularly smoking marijuana could in theory cause Gynecomastia.

I say in theory because there is no strong medical evidence to prove the link between Marijuana, THC, and man boobs. The trials that have been carried out were on animals and research shows what is true for animals doesn't always prove true in people.

The theory is that hormonal changes lead to the gathering of fatty tissue around the male chest region, leading to Gyno as we know it.

Although the clinical research hasn't been completed yet, Adrian Lo, a plastic surgeon and leading Gynecomastia specialist at Pennsylvania Hospital said:

“If you’re a guy and you’re worried about gynecomastia, you shouldn’t smoke pot because there’s a link”

The Verdict

Gynecomastia can be embarrassing for the sufferer and cutting down on smoking marijuana might be enough to decrease the risk of developing it. While further research is required to make a definite link it may pay to be cautious.

Other things you can do to reduce your man boobs would be to exercise to reduce overall fat levels or change your diet.
