Although gynecomastia isn’t life-threatening, it can still be incredibly difficult to live with. What makes it even more frustrating is how misunderstood it often is. You may not realize how much it affects your mental well-being, leading to feelings of isolation or anxiety. And while the condition itself isn’t dangerous, the underlying causes of gynecomastia, like hormonal imbalances, liver issues, or side effects from medications, can signal broader health concerns that shouldn’t be ignored.

What are the main causes of Gynecomastia
The two main reasons we are going to look at that cause Gyno are:
- An excess level of the female hormone estrogen
- High fat levels in your body
In most cases, it’s fairly straightforward to figure out which type of gynecomastia you’re dealing with. There are two main causes of gynecomastia: excess fat (known as pseudogynecomastia) and hormone-related gland growth (true gynecomastia). The difference often comes down to your body type and overall fitness level.
If you're relatively slim or lean but still have noticeable chest swelling, it's a strong sign that your gynecomastia is hormonal, most likely linked to elevated estrogen levels or a drop in testosterone. This kind of glandular tissue won’t go away with exercise or fat loss alone, and it often feels firm or rubbery beneath the nipple.
On the other hand, if you're overweight or carrying extra body fat, the issue is often tied to pseudogynecomastia. In these cases, excess fat tends to accumulate in the chest area, and many men notice their “man boobs” shrinking significantly once they start losing weight through diet and exercise. However, if fat loss only helps partially, it’s possible there’s a hormonal component as well.
Some men are in the unfortunate position of having both too many fat cells around their chest AND an estrogen problem. For all causes of gynecomastia, there is a solution. In this article, we will look at the two main causes of gynecomastia. Then I will present strategies to overcome man boobs permanently and safely.
Gynecomastia Caused by Fat
When you are obese or overweight, fat cells spread across your body. And while the majority of men tend to put on weight around their belly, some find that the cells are prevalent in their chest, causing the appearance of “Moobs”.
The fat is stored underneath the breast tissue, which we all have to varying degrees. It pushes out the tissue and causes what some feel is an unattractive condition.
So, how do you treat or reduce Gynecomastia caused by fat?
Sensible diet and exercise advice applies here, as you cannot spot reduce fat.
Diet-wise, you should eat about 2000 calories a day (depending on factors such as your age) in order to create a calorie deficit.
With exercise, you can work on your pectoral muscles with weight lifting but be careful as overdeveloped pectoral muscles can make man boobs look worse.

Gynecomastia Caused by Estrogen
Exercise also works for the second of the main causes of Gynecomastia. It works to increase levels of the male hormone testosterone in your body, which in turn balances out the effects of estrogen.
But why do you have estrogen in your body to begin with? We all need a little bit to keep our bodies functioning properly, but it is when the levels of this hormone get out of whack that moobs occur.
Doctors can help with hormone therapy, and there are Gynecomastia supplements you can take to regain the balance. You can also take some steps with regard to your diet in order to counteract estrogenic effects.

Things you should cut out or reduce from your diet are:
- Junk food
- Highly processed food
- Sugary foods
- Dairy products

Switching to organic meat and dairy products is also helpful, as usually, hormone injections aren't used in the animals that produce the meat and dairy. As well as helping to reduce Gynecomastia, making the change to eating more veg, etc., means you will feel better for having a healthier diet.
